The Guru’s Office, Mathangi Foundation

This small renovation project at the Mathangi Foundation involved converting an existing accounts office into a private office for the Guru. The space was planned to support his daily routine meeting people, reading, working and spending time in meditation.

The design is simple, calm and filled with natural light. The aim was to create a functional office that also feels peaceful and personal. The existing room was reorganised to keep the layout open and comfortable, with clearly defined areas for working, reading and receiving visitors.

A custom-designed teakwood table forms the main workspace. It is paired with a specially designed chair that allows the Guru to sit comfortably in a cross-legged position while reading or meditating. Both pieces were designed specifically for his way of using the space.

The full-height bookshelf is made using teakwood and natural cane. The open shelves provide easy access to books, while a few softly lit cane sections break the scale of the unit and add warmth. The arrangement of vertical and horizontal members gives the bookshelf a simple rhythm without making it feel heavy.

Behind the table, tall cane panels form a clean backdrop. Concealed lighting at the bottom highlights the texture of the woven cane and creates a soft glow in the evening. Filtered daylight from the windows keeps the room bright during the day.

The interiors were designed and executed using natural materials, including teakwood, cane and soft upholstery. The restrained colour palette allows the textures of these materials to stand out.

The completed office is quiet and welcoming a space designed around the Guru’s everyday needs and reflective of his serene, bright and thoughtful personality.
