Appanaickenpatti House is a century-old ancestral home restored with the intention of preserving its original character and memories. Rather than redesigning the house, the restoration focused on carefully repairing and renewing its existing architectural elements while adapting it for present-day living.

The tiled pitched roofs, exposed wooden rafters, high ceilings, arched openings, clerestory windows and traditional timber doors continue to define the home. These features allow natural light and air to move through the interiors while retaining the proportions and spatial character of the original structure.

The existing oxide flooring was replaced with custom-designed Athangudi tiles. Each space has its own pattern and colour palette, ranging from warm yellow floral motifs in the living and kitchen areas to a striking composition of red, black and white in the dining room. The handmade tiles retain the warmth and familiarity of the earlier flooring while giving the restored interiors a distinct identity.

Most of the furniture belonging to the house was carefully restored and reused, with its age and craftsmanship retained wherever possible. A few new pieces from Alankaram and Tusker Katha were handpicked to complement the existing furniture and add a subtle contemporary layer. Cane, timber, patterned fabrics and collected objects bring warmth and a lived-in quality to the spaces.

The kitchen was updated with deep green cabinetry and patterned tiles, while the bedrooms remain simple and restful, with restored wooden beds and visible tiled roof structures. The bathrooms were adapted for modern use through restrained additions that sit comfortably within the traditional setting.

The project is not about making the old appear new. It is about preserving the soul of a home that has evolved over generations. Through careful restoration, reuse and thoughtful additions, Appanaickenpatti House continues its story without losing the essence that has defined it for over a hundred years.
